Karaokê Indie

The party happens every Wednesday at Drinkeria Maldita Copa. A karaoke where you can only sing rock songs. Songs from Morissey, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Pavement, Weezer, Social Distortion, and more. It should be a lot of fun, tonight I’ll see it for myself! It starts at 8pm and get there early to put your name on the list, because from what I heard some people go home without singing. The entrance is R$8.

Pagode da Arruda

Pagode da Arruda was created by some friends who wanted to keep the real samba alive. They play the best of samba music. Music from people like Cartola, Zeketi, Zeca Pagodinho, Fundo de Quintal, Beth Carvalho and more. Every Wednesday the band plays at Parada da Lapa. The price tonight is R$10 and starts at 8pm.

Gente Fina Quarta

Some djs play lounge, dance and hiphop. As for the place, the first floor is a lounge with tables and a bar. Upstairs, there’s a dancefloor and a bar. Some couches around the dancefloor provides a place to rest for a while, but don’t count on chatting while on it. Dress code: dress up, but nothing excessive. It starts at 7pm. The price: R$15 (with bonus).

Arraialzinho

Arraial means a typical party that happens in Brazil in June. The producers of this party are the same from Bailinho (which is a very fun party with a lot of beautiful people and great music). Anyway, I think you won’t be dissapointed at this one. Lots of great food treats and dancing to a live band. It happens at Clube de Remo do Flamengo this Saturday from 3pm til 11pm. Tickets are R$25 (sold at some BR gas stations – one in lagoa and barra for sure).

Festa PHUNK!

The party is produced by the djs: Artur Miró, Saenns Peña and Coisa Fina (there are others too). The music played is a variety of grooves and black music for people of every kind and age. Friday 12th June – All the single ladies!!

So today is the day we celebrate the brazillian version of Valentine’s Day. Which means that if you’re at a nightclub, you’re single.

Baile dos Solteiros (Single’s Ball)

Tonight at Casa Rosa Dom Braga will be playing along with some guests. Before and after the show, the dj Zédoroque will play some dancing samba and black music. At the other dance floor dj Fernando will play black music. The place is a big pink house modified to a party house, with a nice outdoor area and pool tables. It starts at 11pm. The price: woman R$10 before midnight R$15 after, and man R$25.

Bateria da Mangueira

Mangueira is a very traditional samba school. During the year they rehearse and play in some places (with a smaller group of percussionists). Tonight they’ll play at Estrela da Lapa. It’s supposed to start at 11pm. After the show, dj Ailton Arêas will be in charge. And the price is R$25 (for the first 300 tickets) and R$30 for the others.

Happy Single Life

Tonight at Namaste Club a lot of funk music. The music: hiphop, black, house, funk, old funk and samba. And everybody gets a free drink from Bacardi until 1am. Festa Americana

Tonight at Nossa Sem Hora the party is called “american party” (which is what we call the parties that happened at the play area of the buildings when we teenagers). Anyway, the party has a different setlist: wedding theme. There’s also a band Mal de Cabeça that plays every friday (but it starts playing late, around 3am). The production of the party also gives out some fantasy items. It should be fun! Don’t know how much is the cover or the time it starts (but you should get there early), because they didn’t answer my e-mail or my phone calls.

Thursday 11th June

Casa da Matriz

Exclusively on Thurdays the house nightclub is great for dancing to 80s, rock and indie songs on the first floor and some drum ‘n bass on the second. It’s a house converted into a club with small rooms and colored walls with weird artworks. Anyway, cheap beer and drinks for a nightclub in Rio. No need for dressing up, the dress code is casual and confortable. Get there early (it’s a holiday), it will be packed today! And by early I mean around 10:30pm (you can wait having a drink at a bar at the end of the road).

Usually, the first floor is more of a lounge with tables and a bar. But on Thursdays it’s Samba Day with live samba music. Every Thursday, the band Zoasamba make lots of people dance. Dress code: dress up, but nothing excessive.

About Melt

I just have to say I don’t like the place.. I’ve been there 4 or 5 times, yesterday being one. The party yesterday, one that I usually recommend here (not anymore) had everything to be great: a live band playing pop samba, which is the type of samba you dance to. Anyway, probably because today is a holiday, there was a huge queue and the thing I hate the most, people jumping the queue. Anyway, when I got in (around midnight) I went to the second floor. At the dancefloor: hiphop music. And more hiphop. And more hiphop. And more hiphop. Until 2am, the band hadn’t start to play. So I decided to go home, but first I went for a sandwich at Keb (recommend!! stays open til late). Why do they start playing at 2am? That’s reaaally late! So anyway.. For those still interested in going that happens every Wednesday at Melt!

Marina Lima concert at the beach. Luiza Possi will sing erlier at 9pm. Free entrance, since the beach is open!

11:55pm – Centro
Oficial opening with Beth Carvalho’s concert, after Carlos Lyra’s (9pm) and Dudu Nobre’s (11pm) at Praça XV at the city centre. I’d pick this one! Also free!

Saturday

11am – Centro
Performances and space interventions planned by Hélio Oiticica (very famous painter and artist from Brazil) Arts Center at Praça Tiradentes. Free.

2pm – Centro
Adriana Calcanhoto concert at Teatro Carlos Gomes (Address: Praça Tiradentes). I’m not a fan, but hear ir here before going. Entrance: R$5.

5pm – Arpoador
A lot of samba music sang by Madureira’s samba school singers. Happens at Arpoador. Free.

10pm – Centro
Marcelo Camelo concert. I’m a huuuuuge fan of the band he used to be at called Los Hermanos, but he went for a solo career. He has a great voice! At Praça XV. Free.

11:30pm – Centro
Mart’nália is a great samba group! Very popular! Happens also at Praça XV. Free!

Sunday

3am – Centro
Bangalafumenga (myspace): samba block that parades the streets during carnival. I went on their parade this year, awesome!!! Happens at Praça XV. Free.

6pm – Centro
Arraiá do Boitatá. Arraiá means a typical party that happens in Brazil in June. And Boitatá is a samba block that usually parades on the street during carnival. So the mix of two very different parties should at least be interesting. This one deserves my presence! Happens at Rua do Mercado. Free!

9pm – Centro
Lulu Santos concert. Great pop-brazillian singer. Happens at Praça XV. Free.

Friday 5th June

Black Friday

The party happens tonight at Clandestino Bar, a dark pub in an european style next to a backpackers in Copacabana. Music: soul, funk from the 70s, hiphop and similar (and some funk too). Plus double drinks: beer until midnight and mojitos and cuba libres until 1am. The price: R$10 until 1am and R$15 after.

Brazooka

The party happens at Casa da Matriz every Friday. You can hear a lot of brazillian music such as Seu Jorge, Los Hermanos, Maria Rita, Chico Buarque, Chico Science, played by three djs (one being: dj Janot). The place is a house converted into a club with small rooms and colored walls with weird artworks. Anyway, cheap beer and drinks for a nightclub in Rio. No need for dressing up, the dress code is casual and confortable. Starts at 11pm and the prices: is R$20 for woman and R$25. I’m trying to find a flyer to pay less, but I only found last month’s. Samba do Mofo

The band Zacaros will be playing tonight at Mofo Lapa. They play samba, pop, soul and samba funk. In the setlist artists like Jorge Ben Jor, Seu Jorge, Farofa Carioca, Tim Maia and Lenine. Before and after the show Dj Tom will play all sorts of music, from rock to samba.

As for the bar, on the ground floor there are tables and chairs where you can sit and enjoy some beers. After long stairs, on the first floor there’s a dancefloor and that’s where the dj and the band play. Great music and great air conditioning. To get to the first floor you have to pay R$20.

Galocantô

The band is playing tonight at Teatro Odisséia. Nice “roda de” samba. Check out their My Space. There will also be other attractions: Karla da Silva and dj Ailton Areas. Starts at 9pm. Samba and a lot of pop music is what wednesday is all about at Melt. The singer Ivo Meireles along with some guests commands the party. They interpret live the greatest hits of samba, funk and pop, getting everybody on the dancefloor. Also Dj Adriano plays some hiphop, mpb and dance after the show. It starts at 8pm and the price is R$20 for woman and R$40 for man.

Tuesday 26th May

Galocantô

The band is playing tonight at Carioca da Gema. Nice group of samba. Check out their My Space. Starts at 9pm and it’s R$20. As for the place… On the first floor, there’s a bar, a stage, some space to dance with some tables around it. That’s where the bands play. There’s also a mezzanine where you can just chill and listen to some music and maybe have some of the typical brazillian appetizers. The second floor is a calm ambience. There you’ll find a bar, some tables and a projector so you can watch the show from downstairs.

DJ Malboro

Upstairs, there’s a dancefloor and a bar. Some couches around the dancefloor provides a place to rest for a while, but don’t count on chatting while on it. It happens at Gente Fina Bar & Lounge. Plus there are double drinks: 2 for 1 on beer and caipirinhas until 10pm. It starts at 6:30pm. And woman, if you get there before 7pm (which is when the band starts playing) the entrance is free.
